Enjoying Relief from Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS) with Alkaline Water

More and more people are being diagnosed with digestive system problems like irritable bowel syndrome, gastro-esophageal disease, and non-ulcer dyspepsia. While the symptoms can be uncomfortable, getting an actual diagnosis as to the problem can be difficult, leaving many patients going from doctor to doctor searching for a cure. However, thanks to alkaline water, hope may be in sight.

Preliminary studies

The preliminary studies of the benefits of alkaline water have proven to be quite promising. Patients who drank alkaline water had fewer complaints of IBS and other bowel problems. And while the effects on gastric pH levels was only temporarily changed through the drinking of alkaline water, patients still reported a lessening of symptoms, particularly in the study group where altered bowel movements had already been observed as a results of the disease.

Medical treatments

Over the years, the treatment of digestive disorders has changed dramatically. Part of this is due to improvements in diagnostic technology, including gastrointestinal fluorography, endoscopy, ultra-sonography, MRI, and more.

However, while these diagnostic technologies helped with organic diseases, they have done little to aid with the treatment of upper digestive organs and symptoms like nausea and pain or deal with the lower digestive organ symptoms of pain, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS falls into this category, and it is considered to be a dysfunction of the digestive organs.

Digestive discomfort surveys

In surveys of nearly 1000 patients surveyed between the ages of 20 and 45, over a third of them had upper digestive complaints and nearly 18% had lower digestive complaints. Almost two thirds had experienced abdominal pain in the last year, and over half had suffered from abdominal pain at least 6 times in the past year.  The majority of those surveyed ranked the pain as not disturbing or not affecting daily life and did not require a doctor’s visit. Over a third had some form of altered bowel movements, and over half suffered from chronic constipation. None of the patients had been diagnosed with a specific disorder despite their history of complaints.

Treating IBS with alkaline water

The good news is that many of these symptoms can be treated with alkaline water. Alkaline water has been available since the 1960s and has been used for various digestive complaints, including IBS. Current studies are in place to determine the most effective alkalinity of water for various treatments and to determine the validity of claims that alkaline water can alter digestive system pH levels enough to be effective.

The thought is that because alkaline water has a higher pH than digestive acid, it can effectively neutralize the acids that are responsible for causing the symptoms associated with IBS and similar complaints. By adding alkaline water to your daily routine, you can help your body to balance its own pH naturally. As the pH returns to a normal level, you will see a decrease in bowel complaints and discomforts and start to feel more like yourself again. Many of the patients in the study have reported fewer bowel discomforts and a decrease in the instances of diarrhea and/or constipation.
